Reefton motel

Reefton

Reefton, originally known as Quartzopolis, is rich in history. Founded in the late 1860s during the gold rush, small gold mining towns emerged in the surrounding hills. Today, remnants of this history can still be seen at nearby mining sites and within Reefton itself which features historic buildings, scenic walks, an extensive photo gallery and a museum.

The town gained further fame by becoming the first in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public electricity supply, with its main street lit up for Christmas in 1888.

Reefton also boasts a vibrant arts scene, with talented local artists exhibiting their work at the Broadway gallery. Open-cast coal mining and dairying are also significant industries. The town is known for its warm hospitality with cafés and hotels offering delicious food. Reefton provides a variety of interesting activities and maintains a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

Biking in Reefton

Reefton is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Mountain biking fans will discover a wealth of fantastic trails suitable for all skill levels.

Additionally, it offers some of the closest accommodation to the Old Ghost Road, a long-forgotten gold miners’ road that has been revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail, connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mōkihinui River in the north. The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys.

Take time to relax and recharge with a stay at The Nurses Home in Reefton, whether it's before or after your adventure on the Old Ghost Road.

We are proud to be an official partner of The New Zealand Cycle Trail and warmly welcome cyclists to experience the Reefton area and the Old Ghost Road.
